From 7-15 year olds
This module caters for children aged from 7 to 15 years old. It develops the children’s ability in writing from basic mechanics such as grammar rules, spelling, sentences, to developing creative essays. The literacy developments also include ability to read texts of more complex plot, communication and public speaking. Children are given opportunities to perform drama with costumes at their year-end presentation. (link drama to facebook)
This level introduces the basic mechanics of writing and rules of grammar as the children learn the elementary process of writing. Children are also ready to engage in reading simplified classics (link to the story books). Children are also ready to engage in reading simplified classics.
With the foundation in writing, children embark on the journey of writing essays. They learn to organize their thoughts in conventional intro-body-conclusion format, with focus on the flow and linkage of ideas and paragraphing. Some of the writings include writing a story or experience, news report, letter-writing, comic-writing. The cliché ‘Practice makes perfect’ holds true as development of this skill requires regular practices and corrections.
This module further develops the children’s essay writing skills. Writing techniques are taught to improve their expansion of ideas in a coherent order of thoughts. Activities include speech writing, research topic, newspaper reporting, argumentative and fiction writing. Children at this stage are encouraged to read original novels to further improve their writing skills.
Students at this level are ready to develop their own styles of writing. Focus will be on the analysis and comparison of various authors’ work and techniques. The children are constantly reminded to apply the ASAMP technique (Adverbs, Simile, Adjective, Metaphor, Personification). Children are given freedom to adopt a style of writing by employment of creative phrases as they create their own characters, plots, conflicts in their own story. The books read at this stage are of more complicated plot including Animal Farm, The Good Earth, To Kill a Mocking Bird, William Shakespeare stories.
