The Story Behind Scholar Base

Scholar Base started as an English Language centre which focusses on cultivating children to love reading, hence develop their proficiency in English. Scholar Base began as an English language centre in 2005, dedicated to enhancing children’s proficiency in English and nurturing a lifelong reading habit. Its founder, Tan Poh Lee, a mother of four, was inspired to create the centre when she struggled to find an English program that focused on holistic language development. At the time, most centres prioritized grammar drills, which she found neither engaging nor effective for building communication skills. Motivated by this gap, she established the Scholar Base English programme, designed to integrate the development of reading, writing, and public speaking skills, fostering confident and articulate learners.

• Fun and Active Learning

  At Scholar Base, children read a wide variety of storybooks, which helps expand their vocabulary and develop strong writing skills. They also have opportunities to perform on stage, whether by singing songs, reciting poems, telling stories, acting in skits, or delivering speeches. Our gamified learning approach enhances their enjoyment and inspires a lifelong love of learning.

• Positive response from Parents

  Over the years, feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive. Many share how their children now prefer reading storybooks over school textbooks and often ask, “What does Scholar Base do to make our children love coming to the centre?”

The secret lies in our gamified approach to learning. Our lessons are intentionally designed as games, allowing children to feel like they’re playing while actually learning. This interactive and engaging method motivates children, helping them learn more effectively. As we approach our 20th anniversary next year, we are immensely proud to have successfully taught and inspired thousands of children, nurturing a lifelong love for learning. In 2018, we expanded our offerings to include the British Cambridge syllabus, catering to students who thrive in a smaller, more attentive learning environment. To ensure the highest teaching standards, we sent our IGCSE subject teachers to Cambridge Professional Training courses for comprehensive preparation. Our IGCSE results have been outstanding. Last year, two of our students received the prestigious Cambridge Learner Award, and 80% of our students achieved A or A* grades in academic subjects.
